More about this app

APKUpdater fork adding Shizuku-based silent installs next to its APKMirror, Aptoide, F-Droid and IzzyOnDroid sources.

APKUpdater

APKUpdater is an open source tool that simplifies the process of finding updates for your installed apps.
It provides similar functionality to an app store, but instead of depending on a single source, it aggregates the results from APKMirror, Aptoide, F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid, APKPure, GitLab and GitHub.

The 3.x branch is a full rewrite using modern technologies like Jetpack Compose, Flow and WorkManager.

Features

  • Update Sources: Find updates from APKMirror, Aptoide, F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid, APKPure, GitLab, GitHub and Google Play.
  • Search Sources: Find new apps to install from APKMirror, Aptoide, F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid, APKPure, GitLab, GitHub and Google Play.
  • Schedule background update checks and receive a notification when updates are found.
  • Supports Android 5 (21) to Android 14 (34).
  • Supports Android TV.
  • Material Design 3 with Dark, Light and System theme support.
  • Supports Material You on Android 12+.
  • Direct install of updates for sources that support it.
  • Supports installs without user interaction on Android 12+.

How Shizuku is used

Can silently install APK updates, split bundles and XAPK packages via `pm install` through Shizuku.

This is an AI-assisted analysis of Shizuku-related usages in the app's public source code. It is best effort, so it may not catch every single usage.

How this app uses Shizuku

APKUpdater uses Shizuku to install downloaded app updates in the background without the system install prompt.

  • Install APK updates silently: downloaded single file updates are installed in the background with the pm install shell command through Shizuku.
  • Install split bundles silently: multi file app bundles from store sources are installed in the background with staged pm install-create, pm install-write and pm install-commit shell commands through Shizuku.
  • Install XAPK packages silently: downloaded XAPK packages are unpacked and their contained APKs are installed in the background with the staged install shell commands through Shizuku.

Android APIs or commands used

  • pm install
  • pm install-create
  • pm install-write
  • pm install-commit

Notable details

Without Shizuku the same updates install through the normal system installer with confirmation.

Changelog

What's new for version 3.9.0

3.9.0 – a new look, and skipped versions you can see again

This release completes the redesign that 177 and 178 began.

Skipped versions. The ⋮ menu on the Updates tab now offers Show skipped (N): the versions you skipped appear, dimmed, after the others, each with an Unskip button. Until now a skip could only be undone all at once, from Settings. The scheduled-check notification no longer counts skipped versions, so a version skipped for good stops bringing the notification back.

Settings. Rows sit in rounded groups, each with an icon, as in Android's own settings. A switch toggles from anywhere on its row. UI and Utils are now Appearance and Backup and tools, and the About row shows the version.

Bottom bar. A floating rounded panel. Only the Updates count stays red; the Apps and Search counts are plain figures.

APKMirror warning. The dialog has a risk sign, and the button that accepts the risk is drawn in the warning colour.

On a TV:

  • every Settings page puts the focus on its first row;
  • the check hour and frequency open with a short press of OK (they needed a long one);
  • a custom repository's delete button can be reached with the remote;
  • Skip no longer drops the focus to the bottom bar.

Also fixed: the check-hour slider showed 0 twice.

Earlier steps of the redesign: 177 (start screen with a tile per source), 178 (new update cards, Home button).
